For the fifth year in a row, area high school juniors participated in a mock trial as part of their eight month Junior Leadership Bay (JLB) program. The trial took place on March 11th at the Bay County Courthouse Annex.
Junior Leadership Bay is a program of the Bay
County Chamber of Commerce. JLB aims to provide students insight into Bay
County businesses and government, provide an opportunity for them to give back
to the community through service projects, and to learn about government
through hands-on activities like the mock trial.
Local attorney Waylon Thompson says he was very
involved in mock trials as a law school student. With the help of Jay Manuel
and other lawyers and staff at Manuel & Thompson, students get to
experience the excitement of a live trial. The students act as the parties
involved in the lawsuit, various witnesses, and the jury, while real lawyers
try their case and serve as the judge.
